The Gifted Horse was announced in February 2016 as the seventh release in Diageo's Orphan Barrel series. Its older Kentucky bourbon component was distilled at Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, while the younger bourbon and corn whiskey came from Indiana.

The release's origin story centres on an accidental mixing of older and younger whiskey at the Stitzel-Weller site. The final blend was hand-bottled in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
