Every so often you taste a whisky that redefines your definition of excellence.  Mchel Couvreurs's Blossoming does exactly this.

Master of Malt call it a Triumph; Whiskey Jug -Awesome!

Michel Couvreur is more of a finishing house than a distillery, taking Scotch whisky to Burgundy In France for aging in sherry oak casks - a winner for those that love their big sherried whiskies.

A single malt from Michel Couvreur, whose whiskies are sent over from Scotland to be matured in cellars in Burgundy using Sherry oak casks. Couvreur was a big believer in oak playing the biggest part in a whisky's flavour, favouring Sherry oak casks. This expression is well-Sherried indeed, with a lively floral character deeper within.

In the 1950’s Michel Couvreur, originally from Belgium, began making wine in Burgundy. As a frequent traveller to Scotland selling wine, he fell in love with the Scottish way of life and its incredible whisky.

In 1964, Couvreur left Burgundy and travelled over 930 miles to his new home in Scotland where his attention turned to whisky production – from the selection of the most ancient strains of cereals to sourcing extremely rare Sherry oak casks. It became his dream to pursue his passion and make a whisky that was so unique and unlike any other... and that he has certainly done!

In the 70’s Michel returned to France to be nearer to the origin of his much-loved Sherry casks and began digging his own cellar in the hillside of Bouze-Iès-Beaune in Côte d’Or. Here, about midway between the Andalusian vineyards and the Scottish Highlands, Michel Couvreur matures his whiskies, which are firstly distilled in Scotland before being shipped to Burgundy, where they are carefully aged in original Sherry oak casks to produce an exquisite blend of two cultures that creates one exceptional whisky.

What really makes Michel Couvreur Whiskies so unique is the two cellars they have for ageing; one dry cellar that creates a whisky that is spicy and intense with an abv of up to 60% and one very damp cellar creating a whisky that is much more mellow with a lower abv.

Colour:  Bright, pale gold.

Nose:   pens with the aroma of maple syrup pancakes, giving way to rich black cherries, cloves, bread-and-butter pudding and treacle. Apple blossom and roast pork hints sneak in, too.

Palate:  A velvety and opulent mouthfeel with notes of Christmas cake, raisin, cinnamon stick and dried orange peel.

Finish:  Long, rich and intense - the Christmas cake continues, with vanilla custard bringing a lighter sweetness in at the very end.

Whiskey Jug:

"The Michel Couvreur Blossoming Auld Sherried is, in a word, awesome. It’s dark, rich and full in a way that reminds me of some of the best heavily sherried whiskies I’ve ever had. This whisky was tapping on the door of an A from the second I smelled it and I instantly fell in love. The palate followed suite and I ended up going through my entire sample in one evening.

If you’re looking for something that screams “quality sherried whisky” this is what you should reach for. Forget about farces like the Macallan Rare Cask and instead go for something genuine like this. The Michel Couvreur Blossoming Auld Sherried is a whisky with a compelling, true, story and character for days. Lovely stuff."
