Jim Murray Bible rate: 96.  "Glorious", "Superstar whiskey that gives us a reason to live"....Gushing praise from Jim Murray however he's not alone in his recommendation."

The Old Grand-Dad brand was created by Raymond B. Hayden and named after his grandfather Meredith Basil Hayden, Sr. The bourbon has been in production since the 1800’s, including during Prohibition. The bottle in review is the 100 proof variant, and is labelled “Bonded” which is short for Bottled in Bond (see below).

This is the 100 proof version of one of our absolute favourite 'house' bourbons, Old Grand Dad 114, a whiskey revered for its full-throttle flavour profile and unusually high proportion of rye. If one was to find any fault with the 114 proof bottling, it'd be the feisty intensity, something that's remedied in this four year old.

Made from a mashbill of 63% corn, 27% rye and 10% malted barley, this whiskey falls in between the lower 80 proof and higher 114 proof Grand Dads, which partly accounts for why many find it scores extra points for balance and drinkability. In short, it's the best of the three, less the big price tag.

Gushing praise from Jim Murray however he's not alone in his recommendation.

Nose: On the nose, you may encounter a combination of caramel and vanilla notes, along with hints of oak and charred wood.

There might be a subtle spiciness, with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, or even a touch of black pepper. It offers a gentle fruitiness, such as dried apricot or cherry.

Palate: Marked by a sweet and creamy caramel note, which gives it a smooth and slightly sweet profile. Flavours of toffee, honey, and butterscotch, contributing to its sweetness. The spiciness that was hinted at on the nose might come forward more prominently on the palate, with a peppery or cinnamon kick.

Finish: The finish of Old Grand-Dad Bonded tends to be long and warming, with a lingering sweetness and a gentle spice kick.

Old Grand-Dad Bonded might not have the snazziest packaging design, but at its price, this quality, storied bourbon should have a place on every bourbon drinker's shelf.

To be labelled Bottled in Bond, the whiskey must be the product of one distillation season and one distiller at a single distillery, aged in a federally bonded warehouse under U.S. government supervision for at least four years, and it must be bottled at exactly 100 proof. Additionally, the Bottled in Bond label must clearly identify the distillery where it was distilled and where it was bottled, if different.
