The Old Fashioned - Classic & Its Variants

Following on from our article on the history of the old-fashioned, below we have included a recipe for the original, as well as some different variations with a twist on the classic!

Bourbon Old-Fashioned

For when you can’t beat a classic

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar or 1 sugar cube

  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters

  • 1 teaspoon water

  • 60ml bourbon

  • Orange peel, to garnish

METHOD

  1. Add the sugar to the bottom of a rocks glass and cover in 3 dashes of Angostura bitters

  2. Add water, stir until sugar is nearly dissolved.

  3. Fill the glass with large ice cubes, add the bourbon, gently stir to combine.

  4. Express the oil of an orange peel over the glass, then drop in.

Warm Old-Fashioned

Perfect for those chilly days when a cold cocktail just won’t do it

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar or 1 sugar cube

  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters

  • 60ml hot water

  • 60ml bourbon

  • Splash of soda water

  • Orange peel, flavour and garnish

  • Maraschino cherry, flavour and garnish

METHOD

  1. Add the sugar to the bottom of a rocks glass and cover in 3 dashes of Angostura bitters

  2. Add the orange slice and cherry, and a splash of soda water, and muddle thoroughly

  3. Remove the fruit remnants

  4. Add the bourbon, and finish off with the hot water

  5. Garnish with a fresh maraschino cherry and orange slice
